Google phone news

Because Google has conquered the web with internet search, Youtube, Blogger and apps like Gmail, GoogleMaps and Gcal it’s only natural that Google has to build a device that could let anyone from anywhere access these great services. This device it’s likely to be the Gphone and if done right this is what it could have:

Communications: it will support CDMA and GSM standards and have Wi-Fi and 3G for wireless data transfers. It could also support internet telephony through Gtalk and even Skype.

Display: Because iPhone brought the 3/2 inch bright crips display it would be stupid if the Gphone will have something smaller than the iPhone’s given the amount of info that the Gphone will have to display.

Input: Here Gmail has 3 options. It could go for a touchscreen like the iPhone’s, a QWERTY keyboard much like a Blackbery has, or a small slide-out keyboard like many new modern phones have.

Camera: These days the built in digital camera is a must for every phone, so surely the Gphone will have something like a 2MP camera or more.

Because of the GoogleMaps another must for the Gphone to be really wonderful is a GPS that would work hand in hand withe GoogleMaps.

Applications: Be sure that Google will give it’s phone all the applications Google has on the web or desktop like: Search, Gmail, Gcal, Gtalk, Gchat, Documents and Spreadsheets , Google Groups, Google Notebook, Google Maps , YouTube, Blogger, Picasa, and so on.

Now the only thing left to do is wait and see if Google will deliver the Gphone and in case it does (i don’t doubt it) if it will rise to expectations.

Mobiles Don't Pose Bio-Thread

Techtree News Staff Email Print
Sep 14, 2007
Now, mobile phone users across the globe can relax a bit as a new study has revealed that the device has no biological or adverse effects on the health in the short-term.

The study conducted by the Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) program has clearly stated that there s no association between short-term mobile phone use and brain cancer.
Besides, they ve also found no evidence of the mobile phone signals having affects on the brain function.

Meanwhile, the study doesn't seem to be very sure on the longer term exposure of the device, as their studies conducted so far have only included a limited number of participants who ve used their phones for 10 years or more. The committee has recommended further research to be conducted in this area.

Reportedly, the study was based on 28 separate studies looking into the health impact of mobile phones on childhood cancer, brain tumors, blood pressure, and general brain function.

According to Professor Lawrie Challis, chairman of MTHR, This is a very substantial report from a large research program. The study has been published in respected peer-reviewed scientific or medical journals.

In addition, the study also confirmed that the use of a mobile phone while driving, whether hand-held or hands-free, causes impairment to performance compared to that from other in-car distractions. There are, however, indications that the demand on cognitive resources from mobile phones may be greater.

The Gphone is coming; how Google could rewrite the rules

by Daniel Langendorf

If done right, the Gphone and not the iPhone will be the one to change the face of the wireless industry.

Apple’s iPhone, at least in its initial release, has not upended the wireless industry, particularly in the United States, as much as hoped. The iPhone certainly has pushed the cell phone envelope a bit further, and it hints at what’s to come, but so far the iPhone is still playing by the rules.

Google, if it enters the fray as expected with its so-called Gphone, may truly rewrite the rules. What it plans to do is an ongoing topic of discussion and speculation on the Internet, not unlike Apple’s plans for the iPhone before its release at the end of June. The Gphone may be announced as early as next week and may debut as early as the first quarter of 2008. The anticipation will be as fervent as it was for the iPhone, without the Steve Jobs showmanship.

Why Google? Why A Phone?

gphone concept c editGoogle is positioning itself for the future. It’s conquered search on the Internet, revolutionized advertising with AdSense, and opened the door for the development and acceptance of Web applications like Gmail and Gcal. At the same time Google is leading a media renaissance with the acquisitions of YouTube, Blogger, Picasa.

Google could sit tight and count its pennies, not unlike what Microsoft did during its heyday, or it could push forward, beyond the desktop and into the mobile world, where content and information are meeting voice communication and the cell phone.

It’s a natural fit. Google takes what it has pioneered on the desktop and through the browser and applies it to mobile lifestyles, providing a seamless transition for people on the go. At the same time it opens up new opportunities for search and advertising, expanding the “Googleverse” (and bottom line) even more.

Unlike Apple, which positioned itself as hardware-focused and consumer-friendly with the iPhone, Google is diving much deeper into the world of telecommunications and many wonder if it plans to become a wireless carrier just like Verizon or AT&T. Google has been lobbying the U.S. government for changes in wireless policy. While it did not achieve as much as it wanted in the planning for the upcoming 700 Mhz spectrum auction in January, it did push for the fact that consumers in the U.S. can buy any phone and use it on any carrier in the future.

Google is also expected to bid on the spectrum, pledging upwards of $5 billion in an auction that may net the government between $10 billion and $12 billion. What Google plans to do with the spectrum, and how it might fit in with Gphone plans, is the focus of media and Internet speculation.

So what will be Gphone be?

If done right, the Gphone will change the wireless industry, at least in the U.S. If not done right, the Gphone will be just another cell phone with some advanced features. Here’s what it might look like, if done right:

Tech Specs

Operating System

gphone concept dThe big rumor is that Google is working on its own operating system, which would make sense if Google is to tie all of its applications and properties together in a cell phone. Back in 2005, Google purchased the mobile software company Android, started by Danger cofounder and former president Andy Rubin. The Android/Google team supposedly has developed a Linux-based mobile OS, which one expects will integrate tightly with Google’s interests to provide a satisfying user experience.

Radio Communications

To be truly carrier agnostic and international, the Google phone will have to support CDMA and GSM standards. Could these be built into the same phone or will there be several models available for the different carriers? Come to think of it, if Google is successful in its bid for some of the 700 Mhz spectrum, what will it do with it and how will it affect the Google phone?

The Google phone most certainly will support Wi-Fi and most likely 3G for wireless data transfers. Apple has come under fire for not supporting 3G immediately in the iPhone, although this is expected to change with the phone’s next release. The use of 3G also will make the Google phone attractive internationally.

Google’s Gtalk is a VoIP service, allowing people to hold phone conversations over the Internet. Many are hoping and praying that the Google phone will support Internet telephony, either through Gtalk or maybe even Skype.

The Physical Phone

Display

While larger-screen cell phones have been around for many years, the release of the iPhone has drawn attention to an elegant, crisp display that measures a generous 3 inches by 2 inches, eclipsing all cell displays to date. With the amount of data expected to be accessed on a Google phone, it would be stupid not to include a large quality display.

Input

gphone with keyboardPeople are split on the subject of input. Should the Google phone have a touch screen interface like the iPhone, should it have a tiny QWERTY keyboard like a BlackBerry, should it have a stylus/touch interface like a PDA, or should it have a slide-out keyboard found on newer cell phone models?

No matter which direction Google goes, somebody will be unhappy. What Google should keep in mind is this: make input as easy and enjoyable for the user as possible. Remember: People will be interacting with the Google phone in many ways, accessing and using a large amount of data, and creating content, so crummy input will severely impair the device.

The Fun Stuff

The iPhone sports a 2 megapixel camera. Google should at least match this, or maybe go one better if it’s feasible cost-wise. One way Google could differentiate its camera from others is not through megapixels but through image stabilization, which is now found on many point-and-shoot cameras and high-end lenses for digital cameras. Camera shake is prevalent in cell phone cameras — especially, it seems, on the iPhone — and including IS would do wonders to minimize shaky, soft, and slightly blurry images.

Video cameras on cell phones are nice to have, and are becoming more relevant in the era of YouTube. But cell phone video cameras suck. The “film” is grainy and its hard to do anything with the content other than watch it on the phone. A cell phone that could shoot 640 x 480 video, in an acceptable standard (like H.264), and allow people to do something with the content (email, download to a computer, upload to YouTube) would usher in a new wave of mobile content development.

Finally, the Google phone must include GPS, which is another complaint of the iPhone. The iPhone uses Google Maps, a nice-to-have application that falls short of being truly useful without GPS capabilities. Imagine GPS on the Google phone: Addresses in Gmail or in Gcal are automatically mapped and plotted for real-time travel. Another benefit of using GPS is the coming of location-based services and proximity-based notifications.

There’s been very little speculation about the Google phone having a built in MP3 music player and video-playback features like the iPhone and iPod. Music playback is not unlikely, and one can be certain that YouTube will be built into the phone. Whether it can play other video is uncertain.

Design

gphone designIt’s doubtful Google itself will design the phone. Google is expected to use overseas OEMs like HTC or maybe farm design to handset manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, or Danger, freeing Google to work with HTC on the manufacturing.

Google’s track record — as seen through its Web application development — is no thrills and minimalist. Expect the phone to be innovative and full of promise but not nearly as pretty and awe-inspiring as the iPhone.

Applications

There’s no doubt that Google will showcase its suite of applications and properties: its many varieties of Search, Gmail, Gcal, Gtalk, Gchat, Documents and Spreadsheets (part of the so-called Goffice), Google Groups, Google Notebook, Google Maps (and maybe even Google Earth), YouTube, Blogger, Picasa, and so on.

But let’s hope that Google doesn’t go all “Googlely” on us. In other words, promote the “Googleverse” as much as possible but leave the Gphone platform open for third party developers, something that the iPhone lacks. If someone wants to use AOL’s Instant Messenger or Yahoo Chat instead of or in addition to Gchat, let them download and install applications so the phone truly fits their needs.

Google needs to be smart. It has an opportunity here to redefine the relationship between a mobile device, applications, and the customer experience. For the most part, mobile applications today are just extensions of desktop programs. Google should take the opportunity to rethink and tweak its applications to work well in mobile and desktop settings. For example:

gphone gmailGmail and Gcal, as previously noted, can integrate more closely with Google Maps when people are mobile.

Docs could be integrated with Blogger, so when users are mobile and are using Docs they can update easily their blogs without having to use a separate program.

The digital camera application, Picasa, should not only upload photos directly to Picasa but also be flexible enough to upload to non-Google properties such as flickr. Picasa might also provide a few rudimentary editing and image manipulation tools.

The digital video camera application, whatever it may be called, should also upload directly to Google’s YouTube and maybe even supply rudimentary editing tools as well.

By the way, editing — cutting and pasting on a cell phone — should be as easy as possible because people will be moving information between all sorts of Google applications, including Google Groups and Google Notebook. Cutting and pasting is currently not available on the iPhone.

Being Social

To be truly revolutionary, the Google phone should play nice with the other kids, especially in a social setting. Not everybody is using Google’s social network, Dodgeball; in fact, many people use more than one social network — MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Bebo, Twitter — and these should be available on the Gphone through third party developers. Google is rumored to be working on a social aggregator as well, which could certainly work on the phone.

Advertising

gphone adsIt’s the giant smelly monster sitting in the middle of the room. If there’s going to be a Google phone, and it looks like that’s a distinct possibility, expect advertising along the lines of AdSense and the recently introduced “ticker ads” Google is now placing on certain YouTube videos.

Mobile advertising revenue is another billion-dollar cash cow for Google. Some people could care less if there is advertising on the phone, as long as their monthly bill and the cost of the phone are cheaper than they are today. Some people hate advertising and swear that if there are ads on their phone they will not use Google. They’d rather pay higher prices for the phone and their service.

It’s doubtful, but perhaps Google comes out with two flavors: one with advertising, lowering initial purchase costs and monthly bills, and one that has no advertising but costs more to purchase and has higher monthly fees.

Verdict

So what if Google doesn’t deliver the right Gphone? What if it has only some of the features and functions discussed above? The Gphone could still revolutionize the wireless industry, but not by itself.

What if Google and Apple are in cahoots? Google’s Eric Schmidt already sits on Apple’s board of directors. And there’s cozy integration between Google and Apple in the iPhone, AppleTV, and in iLife ‘08. Could Google and Apple — two outsiders — take on the wireless industry and change it? We’ll find out, as soon as Google delivers the Gphone.

Concept Credit: The Gphone concepts were contributed by Lorin Wood, a previsualization designer who specializes in concepts and ideation for Hollywood. His portfolio and art direction can be found at his Web site (he also maintains a blog). Wood’s concepts for last100 explored how Google applications, and its advertising, might look like on the Gphone.

Google phone news

Google is now entering the phone market, the idea is very clear to provide the internet on to the move so that they can earn some more bucks by showing ads to the people and to the Webmasters could earn more business.

We all know that the market is all round the world is waiting for these cheap phones by the google, however google stated that they are not interested in the phone world. Their main focus is to provide internet to the mobile phones, so that people can surf better with the Google phone.

Google spokesperson further said , at this present moment, Google is concentrating on the phone’s software, applications and ads and nonthing else. This shows that they do not have any interest to provide cool services in the market however this shows they are gonna rock the Internet world so that they will still remain the Solo and enjoy the monopoly rights. Might be the T mobile is going to be act as a business partner for providing the network in the initial phase.

So lets see what google has for us, in thier cool and awesome package

Yahoo Messenger launches U.S. Phone In and Phone Out
March 21, 2006

A new public beta of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice is launching today, which you can download here. messenger.yahoo.com Yahoo! launched the international roll-out of Yahoo Phone In and Yahoo Phone Out back in December, and now today they are launching the general availability of Yahoo Phone In and Yahoo Phone Out for the U.S. Calls within the U.S. and to more than 30 other countries can be made for two U.S. cents a minute or less. Specific calling rates can be found at http://voice.yahoo.com. Pre-paid credit plans available in $10.00 and $25.00 increments.

For Yahoo Phone In you can select your own personal phone number and receive calls from your PC or mobile phone for $2.99/month or discounted to $29.90 a year which equates to $2.49/month. Comparatively, SkypeIn (also still in beta) is $12 for 3 months or $4/month - making Skype $1.01 more than Yahoo Phone In. Skype discounts their yearly subscription for SkypeIn at $38/year or $3.16/month which is $0.67 more per month than Yahoo Phone In when using Yahoo Phone In's yearly rate. You can also choose to have multiple phone numbers in different countries. In the beta service, country-based phone numbers are initially available in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States with additional country-based numbers available in the coming months.

Unlike Skype, Yahoo will come with free voicemail and it is integrated directly with Yahoo Mail, so you can retrieve your email and voicemail from Yahoo! Mail. Yahoo! Mail will also display the presence information of your buddies and enable you to call your buddies.

I spoke with Yahoo and they told me that as part of this beta release Yahoo with introduce ads at the bottom of the Yahoo Messenger client. "Yahoo! has made the strategic business decision to increase monetization of Yahoo! Messenger with the introduction of an unobtrusive ad in the client. As part of our thoughtful and considerate approach, we conducted a variety of usability tests and focus groups to ensure we are introducing it the right way. Our users told us that because we are providing a valuable free service, they accept ads. Ads will allow us to put even more resources behind developing and delivering compelling features."

A huge part of this announcement is that Yahoo told me they will be licensing Global IP Sound renowned VoiceEngine which ensures a high-quality VoIP call experience. The downloadable public beta release will be the first version with the GIPS codecs. Yahoo! Messenger with Voice is leveraging the GIPS VoiceEngine Multimedia infrastructure to deliver superb voice quality. GIPS Voice Engine Multimedia is a voice and video processing solution that handles all of the complex quality issues that come with IP communications including jitter delay, packet loss and acoustic echo. Yahoo Messenger doesn't currently have video, but I'm sure when they add it, they'll leverage GIPS's video processing algorithms.

Finally, they added a "Contact Search Bar". The new Contact Search Bar provides a fast way to find and quickly connect with friends and family. As people type their friends’ names, Yahoo! IDs, phone numbers, nicknames or any other information stored in their contact details, matching results will automatically populate the Contact Search Bar.

This version of Yahoo Messenger will leverage the Dialpad network for termination which Yahoo acquired last year.

Google shows phone prototype to vendors

August 02, 2007 (IDG News Service) -- Google Inc. has developed a prototype cell phone that could reach markets within a year, and plans to offer consumers free subscriptions by bundling advertisements with its search engine, e-mail and Web browser software applications, according to a story published Thursday in The Wall Street Journal.

Google is showing the prototype to cell phone manufacturers and network operators as it continues to hone the technical specifications that will allow the phone to offer a better mobile Web browsing experience than current products, the Journal said.

Google declined to comment on the report of the prototype, but confirmed that it is working with partners to expand its software applications from the traditional Internet to mobile devices.

"We're partnering with carriers, manufacturers and content providers around the world to bring Google search and Google applications to mobile users everywhere," Google spokesman Michael Kirkland said in an e-mail statement.

"What our users and partners are telling us is that they want Google search and Google applications on mobile, and we are working hard every day to deliver that," Kirkland said.

The move would echo another recent product launched by a phone industry outsider, Apple Inc.'s iPhone. But Google's product would draw its revenue from a sharply different source, relying on commercial advertising dollars instead of the sticker price of at least $499 for an iPhone and $60 per month for the AT&T Inc. service plan.

Negotiating the fairest way to split those advertising revenues with service providers could be a big hurdle for Google, one analyst said. Another problem is the potential that consumers could be scared off by the prospect of listening to advertisements before being able to make phone calls, said Jeff Kagan, a wireless and telecommunications industry analyst in Atlanta.

"I don't know how successful it's going to be. The model of an ad-supported wireless Web has not been successful over the past 10 years," he said, referring to municipal Wi-Fi networks that offer free Internet connections to users willing to view advertisements while they surf the Web.

Phones make your bad side visible to world

Phones make your bad side visible to world
By Charisse Jones, USA TODAY
NEW YORK — Cell phones that allow people to capture photographic images that can be sent to other users and posted on the Internet are becoming the hottest new electronic gadget.
Adam Seifer is photographed taking pictures with his video camera-telephone device while walking in Manhattan.
Todd Plitt, USA TODAY

But as the use of "picture mail" spreads, so does concern about privacy and propriety. And because the phones can be used to surreptitiously capture images of people in compromising positions, some steps already are being taken to restrict their use:

• The phones have been banned from the locker rooms of The Sports Club/LA, which owns nine upscale gyms in Los Angeles, New York and other cities.

• Seven Hills, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, may soon pass legislation that would bar their use in bathrooms and other private areas of public buildings.

•And Rolling Stone magazine honored a request by pop star Britney Spears to confiscate all cell phones at a recent party in New York. That has prompted speculation that the phones could be banned at other social gatherings attended by celebrities.

The phones allow users to take pictures and send them to other camera phones. The images also can be downloaded to computers and sent over the Internet.

About 80 million of the palm-sized camera phones are in use worldwide, mostly in Europe and Asia. They are fairly new in the USA; fewer than 6 million are in use in North America. But falling prices — they now average about $380 — and improving picture quality are likely to spur growth.

Critics warn that as the phones proliferate, they are turning users into would-be paparazzi, with anyone nearby potential prey.

"They certainly raise a new possibility of invasions of privacy in settings where that has not traditionally been an issue," says David Sobel, general counsel for the Electronic Privacy Information Center in Washington D.C., which examines technology's impact on privacy and civil liberties.

Fears over their use are based on what has happened overseas. In Asia and Western Europe, photos of nude women taken by camera phones are proliferating on the Internet. In China, a rapist used a camera phone to photograph the victim and threatened to expose her to ridicule if she went to authorities. Worried about industrial espionage, camera phone manufacturer Samsung has banned their use in some of its own factories, according to the market research firm Strategy Analytics.

The potential for unsuspecting people to be shown in humiliating situations, with their images transmitted to millions, is especially unsettling, says James Katz, a professor of communication at Rutgers University in New Jersey. "It's that unknown use and potential misuse that disturbs us," Katz says. "We diet and go to the gym so we appear attractive to other people, even strangers. Suddenly we're not able to take the same kind of care about public presentation of ourselves that we'd like because of these mobile phones. They can be used to capture people at their worst or most embarrassing."

Some technology has been introduced to alert the unsuspecting. In Japan, for example, some camera phones make a warning noise when a picture is being taken, Strategy Analytics senior analyst Neil Mawston says.

Although it is unlikely that camera phone technology would ever be banned, some analysts suspect that restrictions could mushroom as people become more aware of potential misuse.

Buck naked?

David Bentkowski, the Seven Hills city councilman who introduced the proposed restrictions in his town last week, discovered the new phones only a few weeks ago, when a friend pulled one out at a football game.

"A few days later, I was working out at the rec center and a guy was using his cell phone," Bentkowski says. "I'm buck-naked, and (I'm thinking), 'This guy could be taking my picture.' "

Bentkowski says the phones should not be allowed in certain public places. But he also says he appreciates the technology, and how, for example, it might enable him to immediately transmit a picture of a constituent's dilapidated home to the town's building commission.

The camera phone's potential for good is profound, too.

In Scotland, rescue workers use the phones to transmit pictures of accident victims to doctors while en route to hospitals, Mawston says. Camera phones were used to photograph a rape in England, and the pictures were turned over to police for evidence, Katz says.

About 2% of the 20,000 photos now posted each day on the Web site Fotolog.net, which allows people to create their own photo journals or share their pictures with others, are taken by camera phones. That number is rapidly increasing, site co-founder Adam Seifer says.

"People don't leave their house without a phone," says Seifer, who just purchased his camera phone. "So they'll never miss those cool little moments that emerge throughout the day."

The Web site has rules against lewd and inappropriate photos, but Seifer doesn't see the camera phone as any more intrusive than more traditional cameras.

"People have had cameras for over 100 years and have taken pictures of strangers they've posted in a variety of formats," he says. "I don't think there's any more or less invasion of privacy happening."

Gary Dann, 23, of Philadelphia, who has had a camera phone for about a year, admits that on a couple of occasions, he has used his Samsung V205 to snap a picture of someone in an unflattering moment — like the "total jerk" at the grocery store who was needlessly yelling at a teenage cashier. More typically, Dann says, he photographs sunsets and moments of his own life. He sees the tiny cameras as tools for art and journalism rather than exploitation.

"It gives the average Joe a voice," says Dann, who has kept an online photo journal for about a year. "Now Joe Schmo in Wisconsin can make a Web page, and the whole world can see it."

New privacy fears

At a time when ordinary people parade their private lives on television for fame and fortune — and when government surveillance has increased in response to crime and terrorism — many Americans have gotten used to being watched, privacy experts say. But they may also be growing weary and ready to rebel.

"People are feeling inhibited because of this sense of being under surveillance, whether it's security cameras in stores or increasingly surveillance in public places," says Sobel of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

"The public is approaching a breaking point with respect to privacy violations generally, so I could certainly see some movement to penalize certain uses" of camera phones, he says.

Courts traditionally have held that people do not have an expectation of privacy in public places, although privacy experts say camera phones may test that idea. If the people being photographed are not involved in a newsworthy event, they might argue that their privacy was violated if the photographer made money from the shot or the picture negatively affected them, Katz says.

"It will be more a matter of penalizing particular uses in particular circumstances," Sobel says. "Pictures taken in settings that we all would deem to carry an expectation of privacy —like a bathroom, like a dressing room, like a locker room — are probably likely to be the first cases that we do see."

Nokia 8600 Luna

Nokia 8600 Luna

If you liked the 8800 Sirocco, you'll love the 8600 Luna. It's a similar look and feel to the classy Sirocco, but more futuristic in style, with a smoked glass sliding cover to protect the keypad. The features have been upgraded, with a stunning 16 million colour screen, a 2 megapixel camera, MP3 player, built-in radio and quadband. The memory is limited to 128 Mbytes (enough for 30 songs) so don't throw away your iPod, but for looks and exclusivity, the 8600 is hard to beat.
Released on 30 May 2007, the Nokia 8600 "Luna" is a stunning black slide-design phone with looks reminiscent of the equally expensive 8800 Sirocco phone. The body is made of stainless steel, with a smoked glass sliding cover to protect the keypad when not in use.

Our first impressions of the 8600 are good. The 8600 manages to look more sophisticated than the Sirocco - it's a more futuristic appearance with less bling. The stainless steel body and the solid 140g of weight make the 8600 a good phone to hold in your palm (if you don't mind carrying a phone this heavy.) The smoked glass cover looks suitably mysterious, but you can access many of the phone's functions using the exposed exterior buttons even with the phone closed. Slide the glass down and you will see a neat keypad, that in our opinion is a nicer keypad to use than the Sirocco's - it's less fiddly, especially for man-sized fingers. The display is far superior to the Sirocco's screen too. It has a high resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and a stunning 16 million colours, and is very easy on the eye.

Inside, the phone is very well featured too, although not at the cutting edge of technology. The camera has 2 megapixels and performs rather averagely when compared with other camera phones in the over-£200 price range. There's a music player and an FM radio too, which is nice. The 8600 is compatible with an (optional) Bluetooth wireless headset. The music player is a handy feature but won't ever replace your iPod as there is insufficient memory. The internal memory of 128 Mbytes is sufficient to hold around 30 songs only and cannot be expanded with a memory card. Connectivity is good: as already mentioned the 8600 supports wireless Bluetooth connectivity, and can also handle USB. Usefully it's a quadband phone, so you can use it anywhere in the world, and battery life is reasonable.

In summary, we feel that this is an excellent alternative to the 8800 Sirocco phone - it costs about the same, and it's going to be just as exclusive. In many ways it's a better phone with an improved LCD screen, a better keypad and the benefit of quadband. On the negative side it lacks a memory card slot and is rather heavy (just like the Sirocco), but the Nokia 8-series phones are about looks and exclusivity first and the 8600 offers both of these. Buy it on contract from Dialaphone or from the Carphone Warehouse.

Features of the Nokia 8600 include:

* 2 megapixel camera
* Video camera
* Display: 16 million colours, 240 x 320 pixels
* Music player
* FM radio
* Polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
* Speakerphone
* Messaging: SMS, MMS, email
* Java games
* WAP, GPRS, EDGE
* Web browser
* Memory: 128 Mbytes
* Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
* Vibration alert
* Quadband
* Weight: 140g
* Talktime: 3.5 hours
* Battery standby: 264 hours

Samsung U600

Samsung U600

In a nutshell: The U600 is the slimmest slide phone ever, measuring an astonishing 10.9mm thickness. Yet it's a high-spec phone featuring a 3 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, and a fully-featured music player with expandable memory to replace your MP3 player. The only thing that may put some people off is the touch sensitive buttons - but sometimes you have to suffer a little to look good!

The Samsung U600 is the first of the second-generation Ultra phones to hit the shops and is the replacement for the enormously popular Samsung D900 ultra-slim slide phone. At just 10.9 mm it's even thinner than the D900, making it the slimmest slide phone available. As well as making it thinner, Samsung have shaved a couple of millimetres off the width of the phone, which is a very welcome improvement, as flat wide phones are not as ergonomic to use as conventionally-sized phones. It's also 10g lighter than the D900, making it an extremely lightweight phone indeed. You can hardly feel the presence of this phone in a jacket pocket! A visual makeover serves to differentiate the U600 from the D900 in the looks department. One important change is that the external buttons (the ones that you can see when the slide is closed) have been made into touch-sensitive buttons (like the Samsung E900). Touch sensitive buttons look cool, but are not to everyone's taste - read our user reviews of the Samsung E900 for a flavour of these! We feel that Samsung have made a mistake here and the touch-sensitive buttons will alienate a certain percentage of users. If you don't want to take the risk then stick with the D900, which is a very safe choice.

Inside the phone, not a lot has changed - at least from a user's perspective. The camera has been uprated from 3.0 to 3.2 megapixels. The battery is less powerful than the D900's, but Samsung claim that battery performance has actually been improved due to a new technology called OPUS (Optimized Power Usage Solution). In our experience, the battery life is only 2-3 days. User memory has been reduced slightly from 70 Mbytes to 60 Mbytes.

The camera is excellent - Samsung's best yet - with a high-resolution 3.2 megapixel resolution, LED flash, autofocus and digital zoom. It doesn't match the Sony Ericsson K800i or the Nokia N95, but it's still one of the best cameras on a phone. Our only complaint about the camera is its slowness in taking a picture - a delay of one or two seconds means that fast moving subjects are hard to photograph. There's also a good quality video camera. The display is high resolution (240 x 320 pixels) with 262,144 colours and is excellent. The music player supports a wide range of formats - MP3, ACC, ACC+ and e-AAC+ - and has very good sound reproduction. You can use the stereo headset supplied by Samsung or a wireless Bluetooth headset. You can also listen to music through the built-in loudspeaker which features a Bang & Olufsen digital power amplifier. The player is easy to use with playlists of up to 30 tracks. With 60 Mbytes of user memory, you can only store around 15 music tracks, so to use your U600 as a music player, you'll need to buy a Micro SD card - a 512 Mbyte card costs around £15 and will enable you to store over 100 tracks. The largest memory card possible is a 2 Gbyte card, with storage for around 500 songs. A PC data link kit is included in the sales package, for transferring music from a PC.

Other features that we like include the messaging options, with support for email attachments and a document viewer for viewing (but not editing) MS Office, PDF and HTML files. We like the EDGE connection for fast downloads, the quad band operating frequency, wireless photo printing with PicBridge-compatible printers and the TV-Out connector for viewing your photos and videos directly on a TV.

Most of all, the U600 works as a lightweight, ultra-slim, look-at-me, sexy-slider kind of phone. It's got the 3 megapixel camera and the music player to back up the looks too. The phone isn't as user friendly as it could have been without the touch-sensitive buttons, but really it would be mean of us not to award a full 5 stars for the U600. Perhaps 4.5 stars sums up our real opinion. A genuine 5 star phone is the G600, which is the replacement for the U600 and has a 5 megapixel camera and no touch-sensitive buttons.

Demand for the U600 is already sky high at launch, and this has driven prices down. You can probably find the best bargain by starting a new contract rather than upgrading on your existing contract (it's easy to port your phone number to a new network). Some of the best deals are available from Dialaphone, currently offering a free U600 with with up to 12 months free line rental, or a choice of free gifts including an LCD TV or an XBOX 360. Alternatively, use our deal finder at the top right of this page to source the best bargains. Vodafone are offering half-price line rental if you buy direct from them. You might be surprised just how affordable this top-end phone is already. The U600 is now available on Pay as you Go too - the lowest price we've found is £139.95 from the Carphone Warehouse.

Features of the Samsung U600 include:

* 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and 4x digital zoom
* Video camera (MPEG4 format)
* Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
* Music player (MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+ formats) with digital power amp
* 64-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
* Voice memo recorder
* Integrated handsfree speakerphone
* Messaging: SMS, MMS, email (POP3, SMTP, IMAP4, SSL, TLS)
* T9 predictive text
* Document viewer for MS Office, PDF and HTML files
* Mobile printing via Bluetooth (PicBridge)
* Java games
* Flight mode
* Personal organiser functions
* Memory: 60 Mbytes plus MicroSD memory card slot (expandable to 2 Gbytes)
* Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, TV-Out
* WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
* Quad band
* Size: 103 x 49 x 11 mm

Nokia 6300

Nokia 6300

In a nutshell: Our favourite Nokia for years and the only Nokia phone ever to be rated 5 stars by our users. A classic design with a beautiful stainless steel finish. Slim, elegant, easy to use and with a good quality 2 megapixel camera, a built-in MP3 player, memory expandable to 2 Gbytes, and wireless Bluetooth connectivity. A must-buy phone!
Nokia's slogan for the 6300 is "Simply beautiful - beautifully simple." The beauty comes from the sleek, classic design with stainless-steel surfaces, and the simplicity reflects the fact that this is an all-round kind of phone: not a smartphone, not 3G, but including all of the functionality that most people want. Sounds like a winner! Could Nokia finally be getting back to what it used to do best - a phone that does just what you want and does it well?

Certainly the phone looks good when you pick it up. It's like the early 6-series Nokia's: exclusive- and expensive-looking, practically designed with a good sized screen and functional keypad, yet updated for 2007 with a 5-way navigation button and high quality colour display. The size is perfect: it's very slim (just 11.7mm) and not too wide, and the weight is enough to make it feel solid and substantial, but not so much that it feels heavy. The keypad is a decent size and is easy to use. The display is exceptional: a high resolution 240 x 320 pixel display with an amazing 16 million colours. On the outside the 6300 ticks all the right boxes.

On the inside, the phone is equipped with all the features that a typical user would expect. The camera is 2 megapixels with an 8x digital zoom and with a video recording function. Enough for casual photography, but not brilliant. There's a music player and an FM radio. A standard Nokia headset is included in the sales package and support for a Bluetooth stereo headset is included. Memory for storing music is limited, with just 7.8 Mbytes of user memory, however you can expand the memory to a maximum of 2 Gbytes by buying a microSD card, which will give you as much memory as an iPod Nano. Both Bluetooth and USB connectivity are supported, and the phone has GPRS and EDGE for fast data downloads. Battery life is excellent. The user interface is a standard Series 40 interface, that Nokia users will be used to, but with the latest enhancements. It's basically a very easy phone to use, with everything well thought out and some real attention to detail.

This is our favourite Nokia phone for a long time. It really is beautiful - quality just oozes out of the phone when you pick it up. The metallic finish completes the look, although this may show scratches if not treated carefully. Ergonomics and user-friendliness are good. The strange thing is that Nokia built their reputation with phones like this, but what have they been doing these past few years with their funky but unusable fashion-phones and their buggy brick-like smartphones? Welcome back Nokia! It was worth the wait!

Still not convinced? Here's a fact: the 6300 is the only Nokia phone ever to be rated 5 stars by our users (out of 100 reviews in total). So what are you waiting for? Go buy it! You can already find some fantastic deals online for the 6300. For instance Dialaphone are offering the 6300 free at less than half-price line rental and with a choice of free gifts ranging from a free memory card to an LCD TV. You'll probably find that a deal like this works out better than upgrading on your existing contract. On Pay as you Go you can pick up the 6300 from the T-Mobile website for just £99.99 on O2, which seems like a fantastic deal for such a good phone.

Features of the Nokia 6300 include:

* 2 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom
* Video camera (176 x 144 pixels)
* Display: TFT, 16.7 million colours, 240 x 320 pixels (2 inches)
* Music player (MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, H.263, H.264 formats)
* FM stereo radio with Visual Radio
* Integrated loudspeaker
* Voice commands and voice recording
* MP3 ringtones, 64-voice polyphonic ringtones, video ringtones
* Messaging: SMS, MMS, email, Instant messaging, Nokia Xpress audio messaging
* Push to talk
* Java games
* Personal organiser with calendar, To-do list, and notes
* Contacts (up to 1000)
* Alarm clock and countdown timer (normal and interval timer)
* Memory: 7.8 Mbytes plus microSD card slot (expandable up to 2 Gbytes)
* Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB
* Flight mode
* WAP, GPRS Class 10, EDGE
* XHTML web browser
* Vibration alert
* Triband
* Size: 106 x 43 x 12 mm
* Weight: 91g
* Talktime: 3.5 hours
* Battery standby: up to 14.5 days (350 hours)

Nokia N95

Nokia N95

In a nutshell: The most technically advanced smartphone ever! Complete with GPS satellite navigation, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, 3G video calling, and every other gadget you can think of! On the downside it's large, and like most smartphones does not have 100% robust firmware. If you've used another Nseries phone or Symbian phone before, then you'll love it!
Another Nokia Nseries smartphone! And this one is the most technically advanced ever! Can it really live up to the hype, or will it prove to be as unreliable and bug-ridden as some of Nokia's other Nseries phones?

The headline features of the eagerly-awaited Nokia N95 are mouth-wateringly amazing:

* Built-in GPS navigation
* 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss & Tessar optics
* Wi-Fi wireless internet connection
* 2.6 inch display with 16 million colours
* Ultra-fast HSDPA data transfer

Let's start with the basics. The Nokia N95 is a 3G smartphone built on the Series 60 Symbian interface (version 3.1). Let's be clear from the start that these types of phone are slow, have a tendency to freeze or shut down, and have unstable firmware. They are also large and heavy. At 120g the N95 is of average weight for a smartphone, but is pretty bulky, despite its slide design. At least you won't forget which pocket it's in! When closed, you can access menu functions using the 5-way navigation key and the associated control keys. The N95 also has several other dedicated media keys that can be used as shortcuts to media functions. This is a good feature if you like to have lots of buttons to push, but sometimes they just end up getting in the way. When you slide the phone open you have access to a full keypad, but like the Nokia N73, the buttons are too small to be really comfortable. The user interface will be familiar to anyone who has used a Series 60 phone before: it's not as simple to use as the Nokias of olden days, but you wouldn't expect such a high powered device to be, would you? So, without getting into the functionality of the phone yet, we'd give it 2 stars for usability.

Now, the kind of person likely to buy this phone isn't going to be put off by wimpy considerations like size and ergonomics. Perhaps not even by warnings of bugs and a sluggish user interface. It's what the phone does that matters most. And this is where the N95 really delivers! The first multimedia feature that you encounter is the screen, and it's a massive one: 2.6 inches across, 240 x 320 pixels, and an incredible 16 million colours. An ambient light detector is used to control the brightness of the screen, making it usable under most lighting conditions. It's one of the best screens ever, and does full justice to the camera and navigation systems.

The camera is a first in the UK: the first phone camera to hit the 5 megapixel mark. At this number of pixels, you can (theoretically) match anything that a dedicated digital camera is capable of - provided that you have the optics to back up the megapixel grunt. Nokia have been developing their camera capabilities quite impressively recently using Carl-Zeiss optics and Tessar lenses - the Nokia N93 being the best camera phone before the release of the N95. The N95 lacks the optical zoom of the N93, but retains the autofocus, flash and lens. Does the 5 megapixel sensor make up for the lack of an optical zoom? The answer is no, so in our opinion the N93 is still king of the camera phones, but for practical purposes the N95 is a better option. It can certainly match or beat the Sony Ericsson K800i. The video camera is also outstanding, recording in VGA resolution (640 x 480 pixels) at up to 30 frames per second with stereo audio. There's a second front-facing camera for making video calls too.

The other most interesting feature of the N95 is the built-in GPS navigation system. The N95 actually has a GPS system built into the phone, that communicates directly with the satellite. This enables you to use the phone to track your position either on foot or in-car. You'll need to buy a license to use the Nokia mapping system though. Now, whilst this is a nice feature to have in a phone, we've got to say that it doesn't match the quality of a dedicated satnav system like the TomTom One. The sensitivity and reliability of the GPS receiver is not as good, and neither is the user-friendliness of the system.

These are the most groundbreaking features, but the N95 has almost everything else you could think of including in a phone too: a music player with support for all common music formats, a stereo FM radio, integrated handsfree speaker, speaker independent voice dialling, talking ringtones, HSDPA (the fast data transfer technology dubbed "3.5G") and lots more! When it comes to connectivity, the N95 is the best-connected device in town, with support for Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, Infrared, Wireless LAN, TV-Out and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Its memory is also more than adequate with up to 160 Mbytes of onboard memory and support for microSD memory cards (up to 2 Gbytes). Battery life is OK - when you consider how much work has to be done to power this beast, you can't really set your expectations too high.

In conclusion, The Nokia N95 is bound to be a smash hit, but equally there are bound to be unsatisfied users returning their N95 to the shop. Early adopters will love the wealth of features that this phone offers (literally the best you can get at the time of launch), but the N95 does suffer from practical disadvantages, and you'll need to decide whether the benefits outweigh the problems.

Features of the Nokia N95 include:

Sony Ericsson W880i

Sony Ericsson W880i

In a nutshell: A supersexy, superslim 3G Walkman phone, the W880i features Sony's award-winning Walkman music player with enough memory for around 250 songs, 3G video calling and a 2 megapixel camera. At just 9.4mm thick, the W880i is the slimmest and lightest 3G phone available, however it misses a couple of features available on other Walkman phones - a radio and a camera flash - and some people may find the keypad a bit fiddly.

Whoa! What have Sony Ericsson been up to? They've put their top-selling Walkman phone on a crash diet, given it a stainless steel casing and bundled in a 1 Gbyte memory card and a stereo headset. The Sony Ericsson W880i is a stunning phone that is a contender for the best Walkman phone so far. It's also the thinnest and lightest 3G phone released in the UK (just 9.4 mm thick and 71g in weight). Yet it's an incredibly well featured music phone. This phone is surely destined to be a winner!

The W880i is a classic-shaped phone that's relatively large but flat. The keypad is reasonably well designed, avoiding the problem that the W850i slide phone had with the top row of keys being hard to access, but the keys are too small and separated. The W880i uses a 5-way scroll key rather than the clumsy joystick used on some of its other phones. Ergonomically we'd give it 3 out of 5. The stainless steel casing gives the phone a real quality feeling though, and the phone looks great both in black or silver.

Like the W850i, this is a 3G phone, with the benefits of 3G video calling, music & video streaming and fast downloads. The camera is 2 megapixels with a digital zoom and a video recording function. This is not as good as the K800i's camera, and lacks a flash, but it's typical for high-end 3G phones and is fine for casual use. The display is a high quality TFT screen with 262,000 colours and 240 x 320 pixels.

The music player is the feature that's at the heart of the W880i, and as you'd expect it's a really excellent player that can match an iPod in music quality. The music player can be accessed by a single click, and you can play, rewind, fast forward, equalise, shuffle tracks and create playlists. Sony's MegaBass™ feature gives added woomph when playing music from the built-in loudspeaker, but for the best quality audio you need to listen via a pair of good headphones. A set of good quality headphones are included in the sales package, and the phone is also compatible with Bluetooth stereo headphones. There are some extra gadgets included in the music department. TrackID™ lets you identify a song (name, artist and album) from a few seconds recording, e.g. a song that you hear on the radio or in a club. The PlayNow™ download service lets you buy and download MP3 ringtones from your phone. The phone is supplied with a 1 Gbyte memory card, so there's lots of room for storing music tracks - almost 250 tracks.

Most types of connectivity are supported. Bluetooth lets you connect your phone to another phone, a PC, a Bluetooth stereo headset, or a car handsfree kit. USB and Fast Port are supported too. The phone is also equipped for the internet age with a web browser, support for RSS feeds and a picture blogging function. 3G lets you access the internet whilst simultaneously making a call, and the internet is "always-on". Flight mode lets you use the music, imaging and organiser functions of the phone with mobile telephony switched off.

Does the W880i lack miss out on anything? It's an obvious question, since the size of the phone is about half that of the W810i Walkman phone. There are a few things. First, the camera is not as good as that on the W810i, but is about the same as that of the W850i, although there's no flash. Fair enough, as this is primarily a music phone and not an all-rounder like the K-series phones. Secondly, the screen is smaller than on some other Sony Ericsson phones. Thirdly there's no radio, and this might be a disappointment to some readers. If you want an FM radio, then the W810i or W850i are the phones for you. Finally, the keys are too small and many people will find difficulty using the keypad, especially for texting.

The Sony Ericsson W880i may not have everything, but it has a heck of a lot. And what it has most of is style. The other Walkman phones, whilst being fantastic phones to use, are shall we say a bit dull to look at. The W880i is still brick-shaped, but it's a very nice-looking brick and one that many people will be very happy to have in their pocket. However, on balance we still prefer the W810i which has the advantages of a better keypad, superior camera (with flash), and a radio.

Whilst more expensive than the W810i, there are already some good deals appearing on the net for the W880i. You can get a free W880i from Dialaphone with half-price line rental for up to 13 months or with a free Nintendo DS. The W880i has fallen in price recently on Pay As You Go - the Carphone Warehouse currently have it for just £169.95 (compared with £199.95 in July.)

Sony Ericsson W810i

Sony Ericsson W810i

Arguably the best of the Walkman phones, the W810i has everything you need in a music player phone: Sony's award-winning Walkman music player with enough memory to store 20 full-length audio CD's, a built-in FM radio, and a 2 megapixel camera with autofocus. In our opinion this is a phone that cannot be faulted.

Launched in April 2006, The Sony Ericsson W810i is the upgraded version of the highly acclaimed and massively popular Sony Ericsson W800i, the first Walkman™ branded mobile phone.

There are a few physical differences between the W810i and the W800i: the W810i is slightly thinner, has raised keys instead of embedded keys, and has a 5-way navigation button instead of the W800i's slightly awkward joystick. Apart from this external makeover, the differences between the W810i and the W800i are minor. The W810i has the advantage of EDGE (for faster internet access) an is quadband instead of triband. It also has Fast Port - a system connector that enables faster data transfer from phone to PC and PC to phone, and which also serves as a charging port.

The W810i is designed to be an outstanding music player phone, and it succeeds. The media player supports both MP3 and AAC formats and audio quality is superb. Mega Bass™ enhances bass frequencies for a better overall music experience. There's loads of memory for storing music, as the W810i comes bundled with a 512 Mbyte Memory Stick PRO Duo™ - enough to store up to 20 full-length audio CD's. The memory stick is expandable to 1 Gbyte. Software for ripping CD's is supplied. In addition to the MP3 player there's an FM radio with RDS. A quality headset is included in the sales package, and the W810i can also be connected to an external speaker system via an optional cable.

On the imaging side, the W810i has the same 2-megapixel camera as the W800i. This features autofocus, for sharper images, a 4x digital zoom, camera light and a video recorder. It's one of the best camera phones available, and has an outstanding screen to accompany it.

Connectivity is excellent too, with support for all types of external connections: Bluetooth, USB, Infra-red, Fast port plus fast internet connectivity using EDGE.

The W810i is a phone that cannot be faulted. It was one of the best phones of 2006 and is still one of the best in 2007. The new Sony Ericsson W610i is also worth considering, as is the ultra-slim W880i. Now that the W810i has been around for quite a while, prices have dropped significantly and on pay monthly contracts you can get a free W810i with half price line rental for 18 months or with a free gift such as a Nintendo DS or an XBOX 360. Check out the Dialaphone website for these deals. The W810i is also available on Pay As You Go - the Carphone Warehouse currently have it for just £79.95 - or for just £99.95 including £70 of free call credit!

Features of the Sony Ericsson W810i include:

* 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, 4x digital zoom & photo light
* Video camera & sound recorder
* Display: 262k colours, 176 x 220 pixels
* Music player
* Mega Bass™
* FM radio RDS
* 40-voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3 & AAC ringtones

* Speakerphone, voice controls, voice mail
* Messaging: SMS (with predictive text), EMS, MMS, Instant messaging, email
* 3D Java games (embedded & downloadable)
* Animated wallpaper
* Picture editor and effects
* Personal organiser functions

Sony Ericsson K800i

Sony Ericsson K800i

Possibly the best camera phone currently available, incorporating a 3.2 megapixel Cyber-Shot™ camera with autofocus and a bright xenon flash. Also comes with a music player, 3G video calling, expandable memory and wireless Bluetooth connectivity. The K800i can be your digital camera and MP3 player as well as a mobile phone. The only downside is that it's a bit heavy and bricklike.

The Sony Ericsson K800i is the first 3G phone in Sony Ericsson's Cyber-Shot™ range of camera phones. It's the best of the Cyber-Shot phones so far, and in our opinion, the best camera phone available in the UK at the time of release.

Whilst large and a little brick-like, the K800i is beautifully built and finished. It's clearly a solidly constructed phone that should last well. The design is traditional and a bit square, but very nicely finished. The back of the phone shares many design features with the Cyber-Shot camera range and looks more like a camera than a phone. There's a cover for the camera lens, and annoyingly this has a habit of sliding off when the phone is in a bag or pocket, causing the camera to activate by itself. The keypad is well designed and easy to use, although the keys are quite small and may not suit someone with large fingers. The screen is large (2.0 inches) and of superb quality. The phone is heavier than average at 115g, but this isn't heavy for a 3G phone, and heavy phones are better at taking pictures because there is less camera shake.

At 3.2 megapixels, the K800i's camera has the highest resolution available at the time of writing (August 2006), but its the quality of the optics that really determines the quality of a camera, and the K800i doesn't disappoint. With autofocus and a real xenon flash (most camera phones have a weaker LCD flash that leads to poor exposure and red-eye), the K800i is a real digital camera, not just a toy. Picture quality is very impressive indeed, and is a match for many dedicated digital cameras. The K800i comes with a novel feature called BestPic™. BestPic takes nine pictures at a time, enabling you to choose the best. There's also a picture stabiliser, helping to eliminate camera shake. Naturally the K800i supports direct printing on PictBridge compatible printers, so you don't need a computer in order to print your pictures.

There's also a video camera, which also makes use of the picture stabiliser, helping to avoid shaky videos. It's not the best video camera around however, which is disappointing given the outstanding quality of the still camera. A video editor is included, so that you can edit videos on the phone. A second video camera is used for 3G video calling.

The music player on the K800i is of very good quality. It's an easy-to-use player that supports playlists. There's also a stereo RDS FM radio. Sound quality by the built-in speakers is good, but doesn't match that of the Sony Ericsson W900i. Stereo output to a normal or wireless headset via Bluetooth is supported.

As well as its outstanding camera and excellent music capabilities, the K800i is a genuine all-rounder. 3G enables 2-way video calling, fast music & video downloads and business applications such as email (although there's no Office document viewer). The K800i supports genuine multitasking, enabling you to talk and access other functions at the same time. A sophisticated web browser is built into the phone, displaying web pages with images as they look on a computer. You can subscribe to RSS feeds from your phone to get news, etc, and you can blog from your phone too. The K800i can act as a broadband connection for your PC, connecting via USB cable or wirelessly by Bluetooth.

The K800i is compatible with the Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™), enabling its memory to be increased to 1 Gbyte or more ( no memory stick is supplied in the sales package). This gives plenty of space for storing music and video. A wide range of connectivity options are available - Bluetooth, USB mass storage, infrared and Fastport (for connecting a charger, portable handsfree, cable or other accessory) - everything except WiFi in fact. Battery life is excellent for a 3G phone.

The K800i is an excellent mobile. Not only is it the best camera phone around at the time of release, but it's a good all-rounder. There are a few things missing, such as wi-fi and a document viewer, but there's no doubting that this is a flagship phone from Sony Ericsson. Disadvantages include the large size, fiddly keypad, and the camera cover that slides off too easily. A bigger irritation is the PC software that is supplied with the phone - this is difficult to install and needs to be addressed by Sony Ericsson in future releases. Compared with its predecessor, the K750i, the K800i offers a significantly better camera, 3G capability, a better screen and more built-in memory but is slightly larger in size and a bit heavier. Compared with the W900i, the K800i has a better camera and is more compact, but is not as good as a music player. A phone that excels in the camera department, but isn't the best in every other respect, we've awarded the K800i 5 stars, but only just! The K800i has now been joined by the K810i.

The K800i has been around for a year now and you can get it on new contracts for free with up to 12 months half-price line rental from Dialaphone - probably a better deal than upgrading with your existing network - and you can keep your existing number if you want to. You can buy the K800i on Pay as you Go from the Carphone Warehouse for £119.95 on Pay as you Go.

Features of the Sony Ericsson K800i include:

* 3G video calling
* 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus, xenon flash and 16x digital zoom
* Video recorder (164 x 144 pixels, 15 frames per second)
* Second camera for video calling
* Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
* Music player (MP3, AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ and WMA formats)
* FM radio
* MP3 & AAC ringtones (72-voice polyphonic)
* MusicDJ (polyphonic ringtones composer)
* Messaging: SMS, MMS, Email
* Speakerphone
* Sound recorder
* 3D Java games
* Web browser with RSS feeds & picture blogging
* Flight mode
* Personal organiser, File Manager, Phonebook
* Memory: 64 Mbytes plus Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) support

Samsung D900 / D900i

Samsung D900 / D900i

In a nutshell: The superslim D900 is a supersexy sliding phone, complete with a high quality 3 megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, and a fully-featured music player with expandable memory to replace your MP3 player. The D900 has been one of Samsung's most successful phones and was the best selling phone of Winter 2006 / Spring 2007. The D900i is virtually the same but with an FM radio.

D900iThe Samsung D900 puts the WOW! in WOW! FACTOR. Seriously, a phone this exceptional doesn't come along very often, perhaps not since the Samsung D500 in 2004.

You can tell we love the phone, so let's get on with the reasons why. Firstly, this is the world's slimmest slider phone (now beaten by the Samsung U600!). Samsung have really perfected the slide design, and the D900 is silky smooth. The physical appearance of the phone is unbeatable, with a lovely magnesium surface coating and a small but functional keypad making the phone very tactile and easy to use. The LG Chocolate and the Samsung E900 may look cool with their touch-sensitive keypads, but you can't beat the ease-of-use of a conventional keypad. At just 13mm thickness, the D900 even beats the Motorola RAZR in the thinness charts.

Looks aren't everything however, so let's move on to the next reason for choosing the D900 - its 3 megapixel camera with autofocus. This is simply the best camera currently available in any phone after the Sony Ericsson K800i. It gives results of amazing clarity, and what is really astounding is that Samsung have fitted their best ever camera in their thinnest slider phone! We are in awe. The video camera is also of high quality and records in MPEG4 format. The display on the D900 is very finely detailed with outstanding clarity and does full justice to the camera. Some reviewers are mistaken in believing that videos cannot be viewed in full screen, but they can - just press 1 to switch to full screen mode.

Next the music player. This handles a good range of formats - MP3, ACC, ACC+ and e-AAC+ - and has very good sound reproduction with 3D virtual surround sound and a digital power amplifier. The player is easy to use with playlists of up to 30 tracks. You can use the stereo headset supplied by Samsung or a wireless Bluetooth headset. The built-in memory is 70 Mbytes, which is enough to get started, but if you're serious about using the phone as an MP3 player you can buy a Micro SD card - a 512 Mbyte card costs around £15. The only real downside on the music front is that there's no radio included.

The phone has all the usual features that you'd expect - messaging, email, MP3 ringtones, speakerphone, Java games, etc, etc. The full spec is listed below. There are a few bonus features - a document viewer for viewing MS Office files, offline mode for use when listening to music on a plane, a TV-Out connection for viewing images directly on a TV screen, and EDGE for fast internet access. Connectivity is via Bluetooth or fast USB. The user interface is very nice and friendly, with a new menu design featuring a black background - very smart. Battery life is good. One gripe is that you can't use an MP3 for the SMS alert sound (same with all Samsungs), but good news - you can select vibrate and ring simultaneously.

2006 has been an exciting year for phones, but the Samsung D900 has got to be a serious contender for phone of the year. The D900i is virtually the same as the D900 but it also has an FM radio (but is missing the document viewer). The new Samsung U600 is even slimmer. The G600 isn't quite as slim, but features a 5 megapixel camera and is an outstanding phone.

The D900 has been the best selling phone for the first half of 2007 and there are now some incredible deals available. For example, Dialaphone are offering the D900 for free with line rental as low as £13 per month, or with a choice of free gifts including an LCD TV, XBOX 360 or iPod Video. You'll find that a new contract deal like this offers better value than an upgrade, and you can keep your existing number. Use our links at the top right of this page to shop around for a bargain. The Carphone Warehouse has just dropped the price of the D900/D900i on Pay as you Go to £119.95 including £70 of free credit - that's the cheapest we've found so far.

Features of the Samsung D900 include:

* 3 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash and 4x digital zoom
* Video camera (MPEG4 format)
* Display: TFT, 262,144 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
* Music player (MP3, ACC, ACC+, e-AAC+ formats) with 3D sound and digital power amp
* FM radio (D900i only)

Nokia's 6555

Nokia's 6555 does the 3G flip with style

Take a moment to welcome the new Nokia 6555. This 3G (WCDMA of unspecified band) clamshell goes quadband GSM with microSD expansion (30MB on-board) and 240 x 320 QVGA display touting 16 million colors. If thin is your thing and 3G Nokia your game then this is about as good as it gets. Available next month for about €200 pre-tax and pre-subsidy. Unfortunately, Nokia doesn't say where, but its forward-facing profile certainly matches up nicely with Nokia's FCC approved RM-276 handset operating in the 850 and 1900MHz bands (read: AT&T).

Nokia 6555

Nokia has unveiled a new 3G mobile phone, the Nokia 6555 in Europe. This phone has a great and original design and offers outstanding features.

A great thing about this phone is that it is the first WCDMA phone to have a smooth-back fold design with a recessed hinge, creating a seamless line when the phone is opened up.

Besides that, the Nokia 6555 mobile phone also features an external analog clock that only adds to the phone’s aesthetic appeal and timeless elegance.

The Nokia 6555 3G handset features a QVGA 16 million color internal display that offers a brilliantly crisp resolution on a large 240×320 screen.

This stylish phone also has a camera with a 6x zoom and a full screen portrait viewfinder. The camera’s self-portrait function and video sharing ability ensures that the user is able to share special memories with near and dear ones.

The Nokia 6555 mobile phone has an internal memory of 30MB, which can be expanded using the microSD expandable memory.

Other features of the Nokia 6555 3G phone include Bluetooth wireless capability, WCDMA and quadband GSM functionality. No word on the price as yet

Most importantly, the Nokia N95 is with you and connected when you want to use it.”

The innovative 2-way slide concept makes it easy to switch between different modes, going from reading maps to watching a video with a simple slide. A numeric keypad slides out from one end of the device while dedicated media keys slide out from the opposite direction, converting the display into full screen landscape mode. With powerful 3D graphics, the Nokia N95 has a stunning user interface that makes it intuitive to find the features and services you want.

With its integrated GPS at your fingertips, finding your way just got easier. The Maps application includes maps for more than 100 countries, enabling users to explore the world, find specific routes or locate services such as restaurants and hotels and covering more than 15 million points of interest. You can also purchase additional features, such as city guides and voice guided navigation.

With the Carl Zeiss optics on the 5 megapixel camera, you can capture print quality photos and DVD-like quality video clips. Photos and video clips can be enjoyed on a compatible television thanks to the device’s TV out feature and support for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology.

Designed for High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) networks and with support for WLAN, EDGE and WCDMA networks, the Nokia N95 provides excellent coverage and speeds wherever you may be. In HSDPA networks, browsing the internet, reading email, streaming video and downloading large files can be carried out up to 10 times faster than with 3G.

The Nokia N95 also offers a first class entertainment experience with the combination of a large 2.6” QVGA 16 million color display, impressive 3D graphics, built-in stereo speakers offering a 3D stereo effect, standard 3.5 mm audio jack, support for compatible microSD cards and mini USB for convenient data transfer. Browsing the internet on the Nokia N95 is a pleasure using the Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map, with new features such as a floating toolbar, password manager and auto complete, as well as web feeds with support for Atom and auto update.

The Nokia N95 is based on the world’s leading S60 software on Symbian OS, enabling you to personalize your device from a wide choice of compatible applications that can be downloaded to the Nokia N95, including games, navigation, entertainment, productivity and creativity. The Nokia N95 comes out of the box ready to create, connect, consume and interact with some of the internet’s most popular services. Use Yahoo! Verizon’s (VZ) wireless unit became the first U.S. operator to announce plans to carry Motorola’s (MOT) latest multimedia phone, the Motorarz2 V9m. Oh good. More RAZRs.

Motorola’s embattled CEO Ed Zander used to be fond of telling analysts and reporters some variation of the following: “When people ask, ‘What’s after RAZR? I say more RAZRs!’

But is the RAZR played? The Schaumburg, Ill.-based cell phone maker had a dismal second quarter due to a 40% plunge in mobile-device sales. Motorola’s silver lining: It shipped the 100 millionth RAZR in the second quarter.

But the RAZR’s ubiquity might just be its problem. Sure it was a cool device to have in 2005, but these days it seems everyone (including me) has the phone. Zander likes to say the RAZR is a brand, not a single device, but critics say the company thus far hasn’t done enough to turn subsequent RAZRs into the next iconic phone. Will the Motorazr2 V9m be that iconic phone? I don’t know, but it certainly will need a shorter name.
